About 'blackwood sherlock holmes'|Sherlock Holmes 09: Those Halcyon Days [Part 3] [Blackwood/Coward]
Sherlock Holmes is one of the best know fictional characters in both literature and film. Since being created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Britain's greatest detective has appeared in more films than any other character except Dracula. However when there are that many movies they can't all be good, and in fact many are downright painful. Thankfully though there are some true gems that are worth the time of casual and hardcore Holmes fans alike. And before anybody jumps down my throat for not including Jeremy Brett from the PBS series, those adventures were made for TV and I've chosen to limit this list to theatrical releases. Brett was great and worth checking out but this list isn't for him. It should be noted that unlike other lists I've done in the past these films aren't going to be ranked. Frankly trying to declare a definitive Sherlock Holmes film is impossible. While the movies I'm going to talk about are all great there is no one film that manages to get everything right. Some of the films absolutely nail the dynamic of Holmes and his faithful friend Watson but present a lackluster mystery. Others have a great mystery but the key relation between the two friends seems slightly off. No film has completely nailed the balance of the two yet but all of the ones on this list succeed well enough to warrant a look by fans of the Britain's most brilliant detective. Murder by Decree (1979) In this film the mystery that the great Sherlock Holmes (played by Christopher Plummer) and the ever faithful Dr. Watson (played by James Mason) must try to unravel is not taken from any of the stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Nor is the mystery created specifically for the film. Instead fiction collides with fact as Sherlock Holmes attempts to discover the identity of Jack the Ripper. Brought into the most vicious and infamous unsolved case in the history of England, Holmes faces opposition from all sides. There are those in power who would see the great detective off the case and those who hold the key refuse to talk to him. A supposed spiritual medium (played by Donald Sutherland) may hold the key to the whole bloody affair. Can Holmes stop Jack the Ripper before he strikes again? While Christopher Plummer as Holmes is no slouch, serious credit must be given to the incomparable James Mason for what may be the best performance of Watson on screen. Mason has such an inherent sense of gravitas that he isn't so easily brushed off as so many Watsons before him. He also gets to show himself as far more resourceful and generally helpful to Holmes and his process than is normal for the character. This is a welcome relief from the lovable bumbler Watson is too often shown to be. Meanwhile Plummer is a great fit for the role of Holmes but the character has been written slightly off. To be frank, Holmes gets emotionally wrapped up in the case to a degree that is rather out of character. Holmes' interest in his cases has always been in the puzzles, very rarely in the people. So for him to care so much on a personal level about the fate Mary Kelly (who he briefly meets once) just feels strange. However that's an issue that only comes up towards the end and while the writing of the character is somewhat off Plummer still delivers in the performance. The Great Mouse Detective (1986) There may be people who think that this entry is a joke, but if so they've never taken a really good look as this children's version of the famous detective. Based on the Basil of Baker Street children's book series this Disney produced film came out right before The Little Mermaid kicked off the Disney animation renaissance. Due to it coming out just before that seminal film it tends to be unjustly ignored amongst Disney animated films. On the streets of London a young mouse named Olivia witnesses her father's kidnapping. Desperate for help she encounters the kind Dr. Dawson and the two solicit the help of the famous Basil of Baker Street. Basil has little to no interest in the case until he realizes it is connected to Professor Rattigan, a criminal mastermind who has repeatedly eluded Basil's grasp. With Dawson and Olivia in tow Basil begins the hunt for Rattigan before he commits the most dastardly crime he as ever devised. While not a straight Sherlock Holmes tale it does actually tie directly into Holmes' world in a rather clever way. Basil (named after Basil Rathbone who portrayed Holmes in many films) lives in the walls of Holmes' famous 21 Baker Street address. In fact there are audio snippets of Rathbone as Holmes used for background at several points, and while it's never made explicit the implication is that Basil is taking after the human whose home he's occupying. Even though it's a cartoon staring mice, in some ways this is actually a truer interpretation of Holmes than many of the flesh and blood films. Basil is infinitely intelligent but also distinctly lacking intact and is often abrasive (a bold choice for a kid's film.) Thanks to the freedom of animation the overall tone actually manages to capture the more swashbuckling adventure elements that were often left by the wayside in other film adaptations. As great as Basil and Dawson are what truly puts this film over the top is Vincent Price as Professor Rattigan. The legendary actor was very vocal about the fact that this was his favorite role to play in his entire career, and that joy shines through every line that he gives. Rattigan is truly an arch villain, reveling in his own wickedness in a way that usually would be too goofy to make a truly credible villain. However Price pulls it off wonderfully, creating a villain who manages to be both fun to watch and also genuinely intimidating when he needs to be. Between a fantastic villain, great animation, and a truly spot on take on Holmes even adult fans owe it to themselves to check this little gem out. Without a Clue (1988) Who says that a Sherlock Holmes movie has to be a pompous and stuffy affair? This comedy proves that when handled properly the great detective is ripe for laughs. In this version it is in fact Dr. Watson (played by Ben Kingsley) who is the true brains of the pair. Watson created the character of Sherlock Holmes so that he could solve crimes incognito. Having created the phony detective he hired unemployed actor Reginald Kincaid (played by Michael Caine) to complete the illusion. By the time the film opens though Watson is fed up not only with the fame of Holmes but with the drunken Kincaid who plays him. Watson tries to strike out on his own but thanks to public perception none but Sherlock Holmes will do and the pair is forced to reunite to thwart the latest plot of Professor Moriarty. There have been a few comedic takes on Sherlock Holmes over the years and most have failed to be engaging. The key to this is that it's not really making fun of Sherlock Holmes in any broad sense, rather just shifting the credit for the detective's brilliant mind to Dr. Watson. The notion of the brilliant detective is still held in appropriately high esteem, it just turns out that brilliant detective isn't who everybody thinks it is. The premise still could have very easily have fallen flat if it were not for the perfect casting of Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley. In many ways Caine has to actually play two characters in this film. He has to play unintelligent actor Reginald Kincaid and then play Kincaid playing the brilliant Sherlock Holmes, and he does all of this wonderfully. Caine and Kingsley play off each other wonderfully. Their constant bickering is infinitely amusing and helps make this a nice comic change of pace for Holmes fans. Sherlock Holmes(2009) The streets of London are in panic when the murderous Lord Blackwood seems to rise from the dead to reap more terror. As the man who captured him before Sherlock Holmes (played by Robert Downey Jr.) is brought in on the case once more with Dr. Watson (played by Jude Law) in tow. What they uncover is layers of intrigue and danger in what is undoubtedly the most action packed film to feature the famous detective. Director Guy Ritchie (best known for high energy British gangster movies such as Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) brings a whole new kind of energy to this modern take on the classic character. Between secret societies, black magic, murder and the presence of the mischievous Irene Adler (played by Rachel McAdams) Holmes and Watson may have finally met their match. This most recent take on the adventure of Holmes and Watson was able to pull in the more rough and tumble elements of the character and books which had been virtually ignored by previous films. Downey embraces the less flattering elements of Holmes and still makes him a hero to root for. However it's his chemistry with Law that really puts this film on the map. While Watson was so often shown as more of a bumbling foil here he is rightfully a man of great intelligence himself, simply not quite on the same level as Holmes. Buy bringing Watson up to the level he should be rather than dumbing him down the relationship between the two becomes more energetic since Watson can now keep up with his friend. In other films viewers can be left wondering why Holmes has Watson around, in this film there is no question. The film suffers slightly from the performance of Rachel McAdams, who simply can't bring a performance to match Downey and Law. Thankfully though the other elements, particularly Downey and Law's chemistry, are so strong that this is still and adventure well worth taking. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939) Professor Moriarty (played by George Zucco) has slipped through the fingers of justice once again despite the best efforts of Sherlock Holmes (played for the second of fourteen times by Basil Rathbone.) Even though he has yet to be convicted the wicked professor tires of Holmes' interference. Moriarty declares to Holmes that he is going to pull off the most stunning crime in history right under the great detective's nose and in doing so will break him. Moriarty then sets about his complex plot which weaves together a legacy of murder for a wealthy family, a haunting flute melody and a renowned emerald en route to London Tower. Can Holmes, with Dr. Watson (played by Nigel Bruce) at his side, possibly unravel this wily scheme before more innocent blood is spilled? Basil Rathbone is considered by many to be the definitive Holmes and his performance here makes that difficult to argue against. He nails the character's eagerness for a case and his thrill at every new clue and tantalizing twist. Rathbone is a bit more well mannered than many other incarnation of Holmes but in a way that actually makes him somewhat more devious. This version of Holmes is a keen manipulator, using his manners and logic to control the activities of police investigators and even his own clients. George Zucco is especially well cast as Moriarty and the bitter yet respectful rivalry between the two characters is played wonderfully. While the character of Moriarty would re-appear in the Rathbone/Bruce series of Sherlock Holmes movies, Zucco never played him again. It's truly a shame because few other actors have ever nailed the mix of intellect and viciousness like Zucco does here. If there's one stumbling point in this excellent adventure it's Nigel Bruce as Watson. While he has a fine rapport with Rathbone this was the start of the character of Watson being portrayed as a bit of a bumbler, which is a disservice to the character in many ways. The instances of buffoonery are well plaid here but it would in later films they would become far more gratuitous. Overall it set a rather regrettable standard that went unbroken for quite some time. |
